This year marks the 53rd anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising--the historic gay-rights demonstrations that broke out after police raided the Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969, in Greenwich Village in New York, New York.
Additional protests erupted across the country over the next few days, marking the beginning of the modern Gay Pride movement.1 In 1999, President William J. Clinton officially declared June “Gay and Lesbian Pride Month,” and in 2009, President Barack Obama expanded it to “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month.”2
Although largely a cultural movement, LGBTQ+ supporters have helped put medical and psychosocial issues, such as transitioning to another gender, on the map. In this issue we explore just that in the article, “Providing the best care for transgender adolescents” in this month's issue.
Elsewhere in this issue you will learn about the first drug approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for recurrent vulvovaginal candidasis; how endometriosis is linked to early natural menopause; and read highlights from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ Clinical & Scientific Meeting, held this year in San Diego, California. Held live for the first time in 3 years, our intrepid reporters, who are now hopping on and off airplanes regularly to cover conferences that for the past few years have been limited to virtual events, are now able to bring you the latest news on treatments and interventions; hear updates on federal and state guidelines; and finally get to meet and interview key opinion leaders, all in the field of women’s health, so that they can continue to keep you abreast of everything you need to know to offer optimal care to your patients.
There is a lot to be pleased about this month; it is the beginning of summer (And who is going to complain about longer days and more sunshine?); the most dire elements of the COVID-19 pandemic seem to be fading in the rear-view mirror; and, as just noted, with medical conferences once again live, we are truly excited to have our editors share what they have just learned, which they will continue to do, as soon as they unpack their bags.
