In a Contemporary OB/GYN video interview, Jiayao Lei, MBBS, PhD, assistant professor at Karolinska Institutet, discussed findings from a population-based study evaluating the impact of quadrivalent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination on the risk of vulvovaginal lesions. The analysis included multiple birth cohorts that were eligible for different HPV vaccination programs, allowing investigators to compare outcomes based on vaccination timing and coverage.

Emily Lam highlights rising gestational diabetes rates in US populations

Rates of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have risen substantially in the United States in recent years, with a 36% increase observed between 2016 and 2024, according to findings discussed by Emily Lam, MD/MPH student at Northwestern University.

This increase was consistent across the overall population and across 6 primary racial and ethnic groups examined in the analysis, underscoring the broad scope of the trend. Although all groups experienced rising rates, notable disparities persisted. The highest prevalence of gestational diabetes was observed among American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, and Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander individuals, highlighting ongoing inequities in maternal health outcomes.

Interim safety data of RSVpreF vaccination during pregnancy, with Ashley Michnick, PharmD, PhD

An interim analysis published in JAMA on January 8, 2026, found no statistically significant increases in key pregnancy complications among individuals who received the RSVpreF (Abrysvo; Pfizer) during pregnancy.

Self-collected HPV testing could fundamentally change who gets screened for cervical cancer, according to Barbara Levy, MD, FACOG, FACS, clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at George Washington University School of Medicine and chief medical officer at Visana Health.1-3

Building on recently finalized HRSA-supported Women’s Preventive Services Guidelines that designate high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) testing as the preferred screening method for most average-risk women aged 30 to 65 years, Levy said the most profound impact may be on patients who have historically avoided care altogether.
