FAQ: What does the rename from PCOS to PMOS mean for your patients?
A global consensus published in The Lancet has officially renamed polycystic ovary syndrome to polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, a change with broad implications for diagnosis, care, and cardiometabolic screening.
On May 12, 2026, a health policy published in The Lancet formalized the renaming of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) to polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), the result of what the authors called an "unprecedented, rigorous, multistep global consensus process."¹ The process involved 56 leading academic, clinical, and patient organizations and drew on iterative global surveys from more than 14,300 people with the condition and multidisciplinary health professionals from all world regions.¹ For OB/GYNs, pediatricians, endocrinologists, and primary care clinicians, the change carries implications that extend well beyond terminology.
