In the United States, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is the validated screening tool for postpartum depression most commonly used in current clinical practice.

The EPDS takes approximately 5 minutes to complete and has a high sensitivity and specificity for depression diagnosis. A cut-off score of score of 13 is a very reliable indicator of postpartum depression.
