Alex Peahl, MD, MSc, on the feasibility of patient-operated remote biophysical profiles

A University of Michigan pilot study, discussed here by lead researcher Alex F. Peahl, MD, MSc, found patient-operated remote ultrasonography feasible for completing biophysical profiles in high-risk pregnancies.

Antenatal surveillance for high-risk pregnancies has remained largely tethered to in-person visits, even as telemedicine has expanded across other areas of prenatal care, such as antenatal testing for nonstress tests. “Remote biophysical profiles (BPPs), if feasible, could provide gold standard antenatal fetal surveillance at home, improving access to care and reducing patient burden,” wrote authors of a research letter published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology Maternal-Fetal Medicine.1
