A new survey highlights major gaps in fertility knowledge, emphasizing the importance of anti-müllerian hormone testing, insurance coverage awareness, and early proactive care.
In a recent interview with Contemporary OB/GYN, Lisa Becht, MD, FACOG, double board certified fertility specialist with HRC Fertility, highlighted HRC Fertility's recent survey to gauge public awareness of fertility issues, particularly concerning anti-müllerian hormone (AMH) testing.
Becht explained that AMH is a blood test used to evaluate a woman's ovarian reserve, offering insight into egg quantity relative to age. Despite its clinical value, 63% of adults surveyed had never heard of AMH. Although AMH testing has been available for many years, it has only become more accessible to the general public in the last 5 to 10 years. Increasing awareness of AMH can empower women to make proactive fertility decisions, such as considering egg freezing if their ovarian reserve is low.
Approximately 70% of survey respondents expressed interest in attending free fertility seminars. In response, HRC Fertility is hosting free AMH testing events, where participants receive both a blood test and a short consultation with a doctor to interpret results. Becht emphasized the importance of considering factors such as birth control use and underlying medical conditions when evaluating AMH levels.
The survey also highlighted a significant gap in knowledge regarding insurance coverage for fertility treatments. Many individuals are unaware that their employer-provided insurance may cover procedures such as egg freezing. With more US states, such as California, introducing mandates to expand fertility benefits, and private insurers increasingly offering coverage, it is vital for individuals to investigate their options through their HR departments to avoid missing valuable opportunities.
Becht also discussed how clinicians can help spread fertility knowledge by leveraging platforms such as social media and local educational efforts aimed at both the public and fellow health care providers. Patients themselves also play a key role in awareness, often inspiring friends and coworkers to seek fertility evaluation after sharing their personal experiences, especially in workplaces with fertility benefits.
Finally, Becht stressed the emotional complexity of fertility treatment. Patients often face significant stress because of the uncertainty and financial burden involved. Emotional support—from medical teams, partners, friends, support groups, and online communities—is critical for helping patients navigate their journeys. Becht concluded by emphasizing the importance of education and advocacy, highlighting that greater awareness of fertility options can lead to better outcomes for more individuals.
