Easier-to-handle endoscopic camera

Primer on managing multiple pregnancies

Multifetal Pregnancy. A Handbook for Care of the Pregnant Patient, by Roger B. Newman, MD, and Barbara Luke, ScD, MPH, RD, discusses the risks, genetic testing issues, maternal nutritional needs, and obstetrical complications unique to multiple gestations. It includes a chapter on neonatal and postnatal considerations in such pregnancies. The publisher is Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (Tel: 800-638-3030; Fax: 301-824-7390; Web site: http://www.lww.com).

One-dose yeast infection cream

Gynazole-1 from Ther-Rx (Tel: 877-567-7676) is a prescription cream for vaginal yeast infections caused by Candida albicans. Previously, three applications of its active ingredient—2% butoconazole nitrate—were required. But because this product uses a bioadhesion technology that minimizes leakage and allows sustained release of the ingredient, one application is now sufficient.

High-tech containers for culture swabs and specimens

The BBL CultureSwab Collection and Transport System now comes in a foil package with 50-swab units individually sealed in plastic film pouches. The foil and the plastic film block oxygen to prevent oxidation of the transport medium, and contain nitrogen gas to create the optimal environment for various bacteria. The product is designed for use with aerobes and facultative anaerobes. It comes with a choice of swab applicators, including single, double, aluminum-wire and twisted-wire shafts.

The same company, BD Biosciences (Tel: 410-316-4000; Fax: 410-316-4906; Web site: http://www.bd.com), part of Becton, Dickinson and Company, has a new system for collecting, transporting, and preserving vaginal specimens. Specimen transport is possible for up to 72 hours with the BD Affirm VPIII Ambient Temperature Transport System, which stabilizes the rRNA of the target organisms in the specimen and inhibits their growth during transport. This product is for use with the BD Affirm VPIII Microbial Identification Test for detecting the rRNA of Candida spp, Gardnerella vaginalis, and Trichomonas vaginalis.
